Judy worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for 25 years until a heart attack ended her career. Following her recovery, depression and self-doubt kept her from stepping out of her comfort zone to try anything new. Attending the Annapolis Valley Work Centre not only helped her regain her self-esteem, but also gave her the courage to put herself back out into the world and to do things she'd never dreamed of...like driving from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia for a medical appointment! Way to go Judy!
Stephanie worked in a local production facility for 15 years. When the plant was closed, she was left without a plan for her future. She came to PeopleWorx hoping to find at least a new job. What she found was a new perspective about who she is and her life going forward. Listen as she talks about her experience in the Annapolis Valley Work Centre program, where participating in Personal Development (PD) classes gave her courage, self-confidence and a positive outlook to go along with them.
Angela has over 25 years’ experience working in retail, and had spent the last 8 years working for a financial institution until her position was eliminated. She felt the timing was right for a change of pace, and set out to obtain a job in an office environment. During her job search, she realized she would need to fill gaps in her skill set in order to work in the administrative field. She learned about the Annapolis Valley Work Centre program, and enrolled in Basic Office Skills.
Dave moved back to Nova Scotia to be closer to his aging mother. After working in construction for 30 years, he was ready for a change of pace. He didn’t have many ideas, but he did have a fabulous knack for making pizzas. Starting out making pizza from his kitchen at home for friends and neighbours, it wasn’t long before he was encouraged to go into business for himself. He connected with PeopleWorx to learn more about supports available for self-employment, and as they say, the rest is history.
Kelly had been struggling to find employment for some time, and had nearly given up. She attended PeopleWorx’ Jobs, Opportunities, and Basic Skills (JOBS) program in Middleton to gain customer-service skills and experience. Today, she is very excited to be working in a retail setting, and loving what she does. Congratulations Kelly!
Andrea wanted to hire a worker for her business, Hope Seeds in Annapolis Royal, but didn’t have the financial means to pay someone. At the advice of another employer, she connected with PeopleWorx to learn more about the START program through the NS Department of Labour and Advanced Education. Cora and Bob – It didn’t take Cora and Bob long to become bored with retirement. They happened to drive by PeopleWorx’ Opportunity Centre in Coldbrook, and saw the sign promoting a program for mature workers. A single phone call was all it took to get the ball rolling, and they were soon both enrolled in a program – Bob in Age Advantage Plus, and Cora in Navigating Employment Opportunities. They enjoyed their time in the programs immensely, and are both thrilled to be back in the workforce. Well done!
Shynel studied Tourism and Travel Management in Halifax, and spent some time working in the field. Returning to the Valley, she struggled to find work, despite her education and experience. Taking part in PeopleWorx’ Navigating Employment Opportunities program allowed her revisit her job search in a new light, and to reflect on the way she presented herself to others. With bolstered self-confidence, and a revamped resume and cover letter, she attended the Opportunity Expo job fair at the Louis Millett Community Complex on April 20, 2016. There she met with a representative of Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa, and as they say, the rest is history. Shynel begins the next stage of her career journey as Supervisor of the Pines’ Food and Beverage Service Department this summer. Way to go Shynel!
Mary has wanted to be a Truck Driver since she was 12 years old. Over the years, she’s been employed seasonally, doing a wide variety of jobs. Working with the PeopleWorx team in Middleton, she finally decided to go after her dream. Today, she is employed driving a school bus, and gaining valuable experience that will help her launch her career as a Class 1 Driver. Way to go Mary, we are so very proud of you!
Kevin has been in the food service industry for nearly 30 years. When the pressure of being a Chef became too much, he knew he needed to make a change, but didn’t know in which direction to take his career. Connecting with a PeopleWorx Career Practitioner was the first step on his new path. Today, he’s enrolled in an on-line program to become a Holistic Nutritional Practitioner, and excited to start the next chapter of his life. Sally worked in the retail sector for nearly twenty years, but lost her job when her employer shut down their business. While she initially visited PeopleWorx’ Career Resource Centre to work on her resume, when Sally learned about our Continuing Care Assistant program, she knew that was what she really wanted to do. Roxanne is owner of the Valley Rose Flower Shop in Middleton. A couple of years ago, she was approached by PeopleWorx to host a work placement participant from a mature worker program. Roxanne knew nothing about PeopleWorx, and wasn't at all certain how a placement would work out. She decided to take a chance and was rewarded when the placement student turned out to have experience in floral design. After just two days, Roxanne knew she was going to hire the student at the end of the program. When she recently found her growing business in need of another employee, Roxanne reached out to PeopleWorx again. Staff helped her connect with another PeopleWorx program graduate who has since proven to be a great addition to Roxanne’s team!

Alone with a one-year old child, lacking family support, and facing major health issues, she refused to let any obstacle come between her and her goal of becoming self-sufficient.
